About Kwara Central

Kwara Central is one of the 3 senatorial districts in Kwara State, North-Central Nigeria. As a metropolitan senatorial district, it covers 4 Local Government Areas of Asa, Ilorin West, Ilorin East and Ilorin South, and plays host to the state capital. The district has a combined population of about 2 million residents.

Inhabited by peaceful and industrious people who are adherents of both Islamic and Christian faiths, the senatorial district is also made up of different cultures, including Yoruba, Hausa, Fulani, Nupe, Barba, Igbo, Okun, Ibira, among others.

The industrial sector within Kwara Central is growing rapidly, with companies that focus on sugar refining, food processing, soap production, Iron working and soft drink bottling shaping its modern economy. Almost all the major banks and other financial institutions are located within this important and reputable senatorial district.

Kwara Central is equally an important commercial and educational center, with markets for diverse locally cultivated crops such as yams, cassava, maize, groundnut, peanuts, millet, rice, cola-nuts, cotton etc. There is also the significant presence of local handcrafts, including pottery making, wood carving, leather working and cloth weaving. Asa, one of the 4 local governments in the district, is reputed as a major industrial and agricultural hub in the State and beyond.

With crafts, such as blacksmithing and pottery, which is commonly done in locations such as Okelele, Eletu, Oju Ekun, Okekura, Oloje, Abe Emi and Ita Merin, consistently being developed to aid economic growth around Kwara Central; the focus of my legislative agenda is to promote this economic mainstay of our enterprising people nationally, showcase their ingenuity in their chosen vocations and open up their businesses for greater opportunities.

As a senatorial district, Kwara Central is represented in the Nigerian National Assembly by a Senator, and two House of Representatives members representing the two constituencies of Ilorin East and South, Ilorin West and Asa.

The senatorial district plays a crucial role in the political landscape of Kwara State and contributes to the overall development and governance of the state. Kwara Central has been represented by a number of prominent politicians, including Dr. Abubakar Olusola Saraki, a former Leader of the Senate; Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, a two term Senator who would later become the Senate President in the 8th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State

It is also one of the most popular universities in the country, with over 30,000 students enrolled. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various fields of study.

Ilorin Central Mosque

Nestled in the heart of Ilorin, the capital city of Kwara State, Nigeria, stands the magnificent Ilorin Central Mosque. It is the second largest mosque in Nigeria with a capacity of 20,000 worshippers at a time. The mosque was built in 1981 and was remodeled between 2009 and 2012. National Museum, Ilorin

Sobi Hills

Asa Dam

Asa Dam is a dam on the Asa River in Kwara State, Nigeria. It was built in 1976 by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc. The dam has a capacity of 100 million cubic meters and is used for irrigation, drinking water supply, and hydroelectric power generation. The dam is located about 10 kilometers from Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.Asa Dam is a major source of water for irrigation in Kwara State. The dam provides water for about 10,000 hectares of farmland. The dam also provides drinking water for about 1 million people in Kwara State. Asa Dam is also a source of hydroelectric power. The dam has a power station with a capacity of 10 megawatts.

Okuta Ilorin

Okuta Ilorin is a historical stone in Ilorin. It is said to be the stone that Ojo Isekuse, one of the founders of Ilorin, used to sharpen his iron tools. The stone was once deified and worshipped, but is now preserved as a historical artifact. It is located at Bamidele household, Idi ape quarters, Oja oba. Okuta Ilorin is a popular tourist destination and is often visited by people from all over Nigeria. It is a reminder of the city's rich history and culture. The stone which is made of sandstone is believed to be over 500 years old and is about 1.5 meters long, 0.5 meters wide. Okuta Ilorin is a symbol of Ilorin's identity and is an important part of the city's culture.

Ilorin International Airport

Ilorin International Airport is a domestic and international airport located in Ilorin. It serves as a major air transportation hub in the north-central region of the country and plays a significant role in connecting Ilorin to other Nigerian cities and international destinations.The airport is situated approximately 4 kilometers southwest of Ilorin's city center and covers an area of about 1,300 hectares. It is operated by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and has undergone significant upgrades and expansion in recent years to improve its infrastructure and service quality.
